WIRELESS ACCESS - Configuring your Wireless Windows XP/2000 CLient fsu.edu | Technology Services Help Desk

Once you have created your connection, you will need to configure Windows to connect to the wireless network. Note that the instructions below assume you are in "category view".

If your accessing a department Wireless networks the configurations may be different depending on the wireless card or network preference. Faculty, please consult your department Technician before using these instructions.
1. From the Windows taskbar, click: START then CONTROL PANEL.
2. If you are in "Classic View", switch to "Category View".
3. Click "Network and Internet Connections".
4. Click the "Network Connections" icon.
5. Right click the "Wireless Network Connections " icon and select "Properties".
  NOTE: Under Connect Using, you should see the name of your wireless card. If you do not see a name do not assume you have one.

6. Select the "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" component and then click "Properties".
  The Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window will open the General tab.
  Verify under you IP Settings Tab that "Obtain an IP Automatically" is checked before going to the next step.
7. In the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window, on the General tab, click the "Advanced" button.
8. Click on the "DNS" tab

9. Select "Append primary and connection specific DNS suffixes"  
10. Check "Append parent suffixes of the primary DNS suffix"  
11. Uncheck "Register this connections addresses in DNS".  
12. Click the "WINS" tab

13. Verify that "Enable LMHOSTS lookup" is not checked.  
14. Verify that "Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP" is checked.  
15. Click "OK" to close the Advanced TCP/IP Settings window.  
16. Click "OK" to close the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window.  
  You are returned to the Wireless Network Connection Properties Window  
17. In the Wireless Network Connection Properties window, click the "Wireless Network" tab.

18. Make sure "Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings " is checked.
19. Check the Preferred networks area.  
20. In the Network name (SSID) box, Make sure this area is left blank.  
  If it is not blank, Highlight network name and click on "Remove"  
21. On the bottom Click "Advanced" to open the Advanced window.

22. Make sure "Access Point (infrastructure) networks only is checked.  
23. Click "Close" to close window.  
24. Click "OK" to close the Wireless Network Connection Properties window.  
NOTE: Become familiar with your "site survey or strength meter", to find the best connection rate.
Most of the wireless cards on the market today have some sort of signal indicator integrated into the software.
Many times a graduated meter is included to reflect the signal strength and connectivity state.
You may need to refer to the meter from time to time to verify signal strength.
25. If you still can’t get connected, try this. . .  
  Open I.E., choose “tools” , “windows updates”, choose CUSTOM INSTALL

26. Perform all software updates:

27. Perform 25 and 26 again, as needed (make sure there are no more software updates)
  Remember-Your wireless client should be set to:  
  1. You must make sure your TCP/IP settings are set to "DHCP automatically obtain".
2. Make sure you have nothing in the "SSID" or "SID" box.
3. Become familiar with your "site survey or strength meter program", to find the best connection rate.
4. Your homepage should NOT be https://.... .(http://.... - without the s is fine)
5.Disable unused adaptors (Bluetooth)

For the initial connection, open the web browser on the client machine. The web page will be redirected to a logon page. You can logon at the username and password prompt using your user id and password corresponding with your FSUID.

If not successful the first time and your are using Internet Explorer 7, click "continue" to the “not recommended” message.

The only network services that are allowed without logging onto the network are reset a password, account maintenance, etc.
