Configuring Ethernet in Windows 98

Plug one end of your Ethernet Cable (CAT5) into the data jack on the wall and the other end into the data jack of your Ethernet card (This is located in the back of your computer).

The yellow cable below is an Ethernet cable and the cable to the right is a standard telephone cable. Take notice of size difference between the two. Ethernet cables are noticeably thicker and the clear plug end is also wider - it will not fit into a standard phone jack.

When the ethernet card is properly installed, LED lights will light up.

To configure your ethernet on Windows 98, you will need to first verify that your ethernet card drivers are loaded correctly. You do this by running the winipcfg utility that is included with Windows 98. To run this program, perform the following two steps, which are shown in the images below:

  1. Click on the Start Button and then choose Run off the menu.
  2. When the Run box appears type "winipcfg" and then click the OK Button.

  3. Now you will have a window pop up showing IP configuration, in this window is a white box listing one of your available adapters (it often shows PPP Adapter by default). You need to change it to show the information on your ethernet adapter. Do this by choosing the down arrow by the white box. Look for your Ethernet Adapter in the list. In our example we are choosing SMC ethernet card.

If you see no other choices or cannot find your ethernet adapter in the list, your card has not been installed correctly!!

Most likely the Ethernet drivers were not loaded correctly. Contact your support person or the company who made the card to find out how to properly load the ethernet drivers. When that is done go back here and you should see the card in this list, your ethernet card WILL NOT WORK until it shows up in this list!! Below are some examples of what you should see.

  4. If you are able to choose your ethernet card correctly, then your information should look similar to the window below. Make sure your IP Address doesn't start with the numbers 169 or 192. You can check to see if your connection is finding the DHCP server by clicking the Release Button (the IP should go to all zeros like in the second picture), and then click the Renew Button. You should get an IP starts with either 128.186 or 146.201 if you are on FSU campus. If the server assigns you an FSU IP Address, you are on the network. You should now be able to click on Internet Explorer and connect to the web. If not, then continue with the instructions.

  5. To correct your Internet settings, we are going to access the Control Panel. Click on the Start Button and choose Settings. Once inside the Control Panel double-click on the icon titled Network.

  6. You are now in the Network Control Panel. The information should look similar to what is shown below. You should see an item called TCP/IP with an arrow pointing to your Ethernet Adapter. VERY IMPORTANT: Make sure there is only one instance of TCP/IP pointing to each adapter in this window, for example here is a TCP/IP for the Dial-Up Adapter and another one for the Ethernet Adapter. There are not two TCP/IP's for the Dial-Up Adapter! If one of the Adapters has duplicate TCP/IP's then remove one of them by highlighting it and clicking the Remove Button.

  7. Now we want to double check your TCP/IP settings for your ethernet adapter, to do this just highlight the TCP/IP pointing to your Ethernet Adapter like above and then click the Properties Button (you may get a warning window when you do this, just click the OK Button). Your settings should look exactly like the three windows that follow. The first thing to check is the IP address, this should be set to Obtain an IP Address Automatically.

  8. Next click on the Gateway Tab at the top, make sure there are no numbers in either box. If there are numbers listed then highlight them and click the Remove button, when done the window should look exactly like below.

  9. Now click on the DNS Configuration tab, this should be set to Disable DNS like the example below.

  10. Now you are done! Just click on the OK Button on this window and also the Network Configuration screen, you will then get a message like the image below asking you to restart the computer. Just click Yes to restart and when your computer has restarted you should be able to click on Internet Explorer and connect to the Internet!
